The Risk Of Eating Oscar Fish
Oscars aren’t found naturally in the US, as I mentioned above. They are released by their owners and end up in your local creek or lake. These fish often have medications in their bodies that could be dangerous to humans.
An oscar tank can house many different medications. An oscar’s body can take at least half a dozen medications, including ammonia remover and dechlorinator.
These chemicals can be retained in fish’s systems for a very long time. We cannot rule out the possibility that the oscar we just caught may have traces of harmful chemicals in its body.
It is a smart thing to consider all of these factors before you decide whether to eat oscars, or pass.

How To Fillet An Oscar Fish?
Oscars are the largest fish in the tank. However, they’re small relative to other species. It can be difficult to fillet them correctly.
This step-by-step guide will help you fillet an Oscar fish correctly.
- Place the fish on a flat surface. Then, get a small flexible knife.
- To find the end of the soft head meat, cut slowly into the scales. It usually ends at the pectoral fin.
- Use the tip of a knife to cut the fish’s head and tail.
- After the fish has been outlined, place the knife against the spine. Continue cutting using the spine as a guide. Make sure the knife remains in contact with the bones at ALL times.
- Once you reach the backbone, lift up the head meat, and break through the pin bones.
- Once the knife has passed through the ribcage, it will be on the opposite side. Point the tip of your knife down and follow the fillet to cut it out.
- Do the same thing on the other side, and then remove both fillets.
- Each fillet will have a set pin bones that you’ll need to take out. You can run the knife along the bloodline to remove it.
How To Cook Oscar Fish?
Even though I haven’t tried oscars yet, I did watch a lot of YouTube videos and came up with this quick recipe. These are the steps:
After filleting the fish, wash them and then cut them into bite-sized pieces (approx. 2 inches). Marinate the fish in lemon juice, salt, pepper, rosemary, for at least a couple of hours. You may also add any other herbs you like.
Mix the egg in a bowl and season it with a little salt and pepper.
Season breadcrumbs with salt and pepper, garlic powder, ginger powder and paprika powder. Also, you can use ready-to-use seasoned breadcrumbs.
Let the fillets cool in the refrigerator before transferring them to the oven. Then, dip them in the egg batter and then coat them with the breadcrumbs.
In a saucepan, heat butter. After the butter has melted, fry the fish in a pan for 3-4 minutes per side. And you’re done!
