Turtle Penis: The Untold Truth!

Half of the world’s population has a penis. You will be amazed (and jealous) to learn about the reproductive organs of some animals.

One such animal is the blue whale. Their penis length can be between 8 and 10 feet with a girth exceedingly large of more than 1 foot. Even such a large penis-possessing animal can be intimidated by turtles who have a higher junk-to-body ratio.

How Big Is A Turtle’s Penis?

The penises of turtles are approximately half the length of their bodies. A red-eared slider measuring ten inches long is blessed with a penis of over four inches. This is quite a surprise.

When the turtle is not active, its penis lies inside its shell. When the flaccid penis is fully extended, it can grow its length and width by more than 50%, 75%, and 10% respectively.

Shape Of A Turtle’s Penis

The penis of a turtle is similar to a mammal’s penis. It’s a hydraulic cylinder that expands when blood is flowing toward it.

It is dark purple.

Anatomy of a Turtle’s Penis

The erectile bodies of turtles are one, with a collagenous corpus fiber and marginally vascular corpus susgiosum. The turtle’s penis is enlarged because the corpus spongiosum can expand so much.

How Does A Turtle’s Penis Rest Inside Its Shell?

The turtle’s penis is connected to the body cavity by a pair of long retractor muscles that run the length of its penis.

A penis that is inactive doubles itself and lies within its cloaca, resting. When stimulated by the sexual prospect and other factors, the folded penis bulges from its cloaca.

The strong retractor muscles of their penis allow the active penis to bend towards the turtle’s front when it is active.

What Is The Similarity Between A Turtle’s And A Human’s Penis?

The penis of the turtle is perpendicular to its long pivot. These fibers become stiffer due to various stimuli and give the appearance of an erect penis. These collagen fibers function in the same manner as penises in mammals.

In her research paper, Dr. Diane Kelly has shown that the penis designs of turtles and mammals are anatomically convergent.

Appearance Of A Turtle’s Penis

The seminal seam runs from the penis’ base to the glans at the tip. This seam is visible and not hidden in the penis of mammals. These exposed seams are common in reptiles and birds.

These grooves or seams are most prominent at the penis tip of turtles. These glans appear alien-like at first glance.

The glans’ heads can be opened and closed like ceropegia (insect-eating plants) when at work. The glans head pulses when the male turtle is active.

This clip shows a Red-footed Tortoise trying to conceive with a rubber ball. You can see the glans on the purplish-colored head.

Different species of turtles have different glans. The simplest type of sea turtle is simple.

Sea turtles’ glans are perpendicular and linear to the pivot at the base of their penis. It has a single, deeply-folded seminal groove.

The glans are thicker than the skin of semi-aquatic or terrestrial turtles and open in flower-like heads.

Sea Turtles Penis

As I have mentioned, the penises of sea turtles are simpler than other turtles.

Sea turtles are one of the largest species of turtle, and it’s no surprise that they have larger penises.

A carapace of an adult green sea turtle is between 31 and 43 inches in length. Their penises measure over 12 inches.

Green sea turtles are the smallest of all sea turtles. However, their penises are the same size as a person’s hand. You can see the penis size of a leatherback turtle. It is the largest turtle.

Let me give an example of the size of leatherback turtles’ penises.

The carapace length of adult leatherback turtles is over 86 inches. Their penis length is on average over 34 inches. This is almost three times the length of a green turtle’s penis.

So why do turtles have a big penis?

Evolution is always looking for innovative ways to support a species’ lineage. The same holds true for turtles. Male turtles have longer and thicker tails than females.

The vaginal opening of female turtles is generally located at the base or tail. It is actually located along the tail’s length.

This means that the male turtle must have a penis longer than the female to reach the tricky area for insemination.

It would be bold to say that this is all that explains the turtles’ enormous penises. The fossils of Cretaceous sea turtles revealed that they had very long tails. This is a lot longer than the modern-day sea turtles.

Other times turtles show off their large penises

Unlike other turtles, which release their penises only during mating, During rest, male turtles can bulge out their penises as well.

They will often submerge their frontal half in the water while they drink. Then, they will raise their back legs to take out penises from the Cloaca. They appear to be trying to cool their weenies.

After dipping the penis in the water a few times, the penis will be retracted back into the cloaca.

Did You Know that turtles can also display their penis when they are aggressive?

Snapping turtles, for example, are known to show their huge penises in order to avoid being handled. This is usually done when we touch their carapace.

While a turtle’s penis display may not seem intimidating to humans, it can be for their enemies or competitors.

The sheer size of a purple penis, 8 inches in length, is enough to scare off any potential aggressors.

How Do Turtles Mate?

The mating season is when female turtles emit pheromones from their cloaca. These are then picked up by male turtles immediately. Male turtles will follow the females wherever they go. He will pursue her so relentlessly that he will also chase her in the water.

The male will then detect the location of the vagina and the female’s cloacal opening.

After several hours of pursuing the female turtle and sniffing her genitals for hours, the male turtle will finally get in front of her and flail his front limbs to show his long claws. Turtle male chauvinism is indicated by long claws.

He will gently stroke her head with his long claws. Male turtles are not aggressive towards females, unlike male tortoises.

Instead, the male turtle requests the consent of the female. The female turtle then gives cues, turning around to indicate that he should place his penis in her cloaca.

The male will insert his huge penis into the female’s genital canal. The male will then twist and turn his tails in union and pass his semen to the female’s vagina.

Witnesses claim it is an amazing sight.

How do sea turtles mate?

The mating ritual of a sea turtle is very different from that of a semi-aquatic. Like most turtles, sea turtles are also loners. They only foregather during mating season.

Sea turtles begin the mating season when the temperatures rise and the days grow longer.

Because the temperature is a key factor in the gender of their offspring, turtles know this is the best time to reproduce.

Research shows that male offspring will produce offspring if their incubation temperature is higher than 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Females will only be produced if it is lower.

As I mentioned, turtles only come together during mating season. How do they know where to meet?

Both male and female turtles return to the nest where they were born. This is the ideal place for nesting. The females also know this, while males are aware that females will be there.

Fun Fact:

Did you know that sea turtles are able to detect both airborne and waterborne smells? This is what explains why they can sense female pheromones in saltwater.

Male turtles will arrive at the beach earlier than females. Because turtles mate on a “first-come, first served” basis, this is why the male turtles will arrive at the beach earlier than the females.

Female turtles, unlike other species, aren’t fussy about choosing their mate. They will mat with the first turtle to approach them and they will court.

The long claws of a male turtle are located at the tops of his flippers. They hook onto the carapace of the female. His sharp claws can cause shell damage, leaving marks and scratches.

He will then bring out his monstrous penis. It can be as large as half his shell.

The male will then inseminate her vagina near her tail.

After inseminating, the male turtle won’t leave. He will stay attached to her for several hours in order to stop other males from inseminating. He will eventually have to give in to the harassment and constant biting of his competitors.

Both the male and the female will mate with one or two other people after the separation. Once the female has enough eggs for sperm, she can begin nesting.

A female can lay more than 100 eggs in a single season. But laying so many eggs can drain her energy and cause her to not return for mating the next season. The males will continue this pattern every season.

Final Words On Turtle Penis

The penises of turtles can be enormous. They keep their penises inside their shells, so that we may not be aware of their secrets even though they have been around for many years.

Although it is speculation, I believe their monstrous penises helped them repopulate after several mass extinctions.
